Ståle Holgersen is an Associate professor in Human Geography at Stockholm University, Sweden. His research interests include class and capitalism, crises and climate, urban and social geography and climate denialism.
His book, Against the Crisis, analyzes economic and ecological crises, partly to understand the crisis itself, but, even more, to understand capitalism. Crises are not exceptions to an otherwise functioning capitalism, but integral parts of the system. They are the bedrock of the status quo. Still, socialists often cling to the hope that crises are ’opportunities’, and/or resort to Keynesianism as soon as they need concrete policies. In contrast, this book shows how capitalism produces crises, how crises reproduce capitalism, and why we urgently need to develop a socialist approach to crisis.
