From the Wall Street Journal August 23, 2022“A Library in Patmos, a rural western Michigan town is asking the community there to retore its public financing after voters defunded it following a dispute over books with LGBT content…. In Vinton, Iowa, residents criticized their library for having LGBT staff and books with LGBT-related themes. The library closed temporarily in July after staff members quit amid the harassment. Patmos Library, like many libraries and schools across the US has become a center of debate about free speech and what materials are appropriate for children”. Come join us for a four part-discussion about first amendment rights, the history of censorship and book banning with focus on recent and increased efforts to ban books in our schools and public libraries. A syllabus with articles for discussion will be provided prior to the first meeting. The discussion group will meet via Zoom on Tuesdays (September 27 th , October 11 th , October 25 th and November 8 th ) from 7:00- 8:30 pm.
