Caste the origins of our discontents by isabel Wilkerson

You’re Invited to our Autumn Social Justice Read – Caste by Isabel Wilkerson

hanks to the many East Shore folks who participated in our discussion of the 1619 Project that spanned three and a half months this past Spring. Our next read and discussion project will not be quite as long, but one which you will find very illuminating.

The book we have chosen to discuss is Caste by Isabel Wilkerson.  Her book points to our entire social structure in the U.S. as a caste system with a penetrating analysis that is quite convincing and revealing.  Indeed, Caste provides a framework for better understanding our social system and the social dilemmas around race that we as a nation must deal with. The purpose of our study of Caste is to help all of us become better and more active partners in dismantling systems of oppression.

As with the 1619 Project, we will meet on Zoom every other Tuesday beginning on Tuesday, September 21st through December 14th from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.  The entire program will consist of seven Zoom meetings, each devoted to one of the seven parts of the book.  All you need to do is obtain a copy of Caste.  We are using portions of a Study Guide developed by the Foothills Unitarian Church congregation along with other discussion materials to focus our discussions each session.

If any participants have trouble obtaining a copy of the book for any reason, we will have a limited number of copies for loan.

If you would like to join us, please email Ron Prosek of East Shore’s Social Justice Council at: rprosek@earthlink.net
